Manufacturer in search of new recruits to boost staff by a third after sales increase

September 9, 2014

dales jobs

A company which manufactures bespoke building products is seeking to recruit at least 10 new workers after an upsurge in sales.

Dales Fabrications on Crompton Road Industrial Estate in Ilkeston has experienced a growth in turnover of almost half after the first seven months of this year.

It is taking on two apprentices but needs the extra staff to cope with the increased demand for its products which enhance the appearance of buildings such as hospitals, schools, offices, apartment blocks and fire and police stations across the country.

Originally set up in 1977 to meet the demand for precision, purpose steel gutters, the firm later expanded into aluminium eaves systems and then improved its product range to include rainwater systems (gutters and pipes), fascias and soffits, and solar shading, a growing component in modern buildings.

The company currently has 32 employees but managing director Karl Prosser wants to increase this by a third after sales last year met new a target and this year are so far are up by 41 per cent - a six figure sum in cash terms - double the target.

He attributes this to the economy improving, particularly in the construction industry, and increased orders brought about by new initiatives.

"These include trying to reduce our lead times, our support for customers and a greater exposure at trade shows, plus maintaining our prices at a competitive level," said Karl.

"After about six difficult years of no sustained growth because of the recession we are delighted to see a large increase in turnover.

"This encourages the company to invest more - we are visiting an international machine tool event in Germany next month to look at the latest equipment - and to take on more employees.
"

The top job available is production manager, a post that has become vacant after the retirement of Peter Bennett who served 35 years with the company.

Other positions to fill are two project managers and designers, a production processor who moves the design to the people operating the fabrication machine, up to four skilled production operators who have experience of metal fabrication, a driver for a new lorry which is likely to be combined with a forklift, and an extra financial/administration person.

The company has just taken on its first female apprentices - both women in their 20s - on the production side as welders.

They have been taken on with financial help organised by Training 2000 in Derby.

More stylish Southampton city-centre apartments, thanks to new development project

Increasing numbers of young professionals, investors and first time buyers are snapping up stylish apartments in the centre of Southampton, thanks to a new and contemporary development project delivered by Crest Nicholson and HNW Architects.

The stunning multi-storey collection of one and two bedroom apartments and duplexes at Empress Heights, on College Street, offers a city centre lifestyle with a taste of modern luxury at an affordable price and it also features stunning resident open garden areas at three-storey and six-storey levels, which enable residents to benefit from some pleasant outdoor space whilst still being in the heart of bustling Southampton.

The compact development of contemporary apartments boasts bespoke aluminium bullnose fascia soffits, with integral gutter and monocoque support, as well as aluminium wall copings and aluminium rainwater pipes, all designed and manufactured by Dales Fabrications - the UK's leading manufacturers of aluminium eaves products - and expertly fitted to a high quality standard by Dales' Preferred Fixers: Roweaver Developments Limited.

Commenting on the build, Christine Tiernan, Sales and Marketing Director at Crest Nicholson South, said: "It was great to be able to work with Dales Fabrications and use their expertise and knowledge to help with the aluminium work at Empress Heights, based on College Street.

"The development is complete and the collection of one and two bedroom apartments and duplexes are selling well. We have been on schedule throughout the building process and completion was earlier than expected.

"This is certainly an exciting time for prospective buyers in Southampton, especially when Empress Heights can offer a city centre lifestyle with a taste of modern luxury at an affordable price."

Karl Prosser, Managing Director at Dales Fabrications, said: "It has been a real pleasure to work with Crest Nicholson on this exciting, innovative new development in the heart of sparkling Southampton. We are very pleased to have been able to provide bespoke aluminium products to further enhance these aesthetically impressive apartments.

"Our intelligent, modern solutions and attentive design have been seamlessly incorporated into the overall Empress Heights project, which really does make a visual statement. And we are thrilled that the development is already attracting a huge amount of interest from potential buyers aspiring for a truly unique city centre lifestyle.

"We are particularly pleased and grateful for the kind assistance that Roweaver Developments Limited gave us with the project as it progressed. We are delighted once again to be part of a construction team that delivered a development of stunning new homes both on time and on budget."

Tony Russell, Architect at HNW Architects, said: "HNW were delighted to be involved in the Empress Heights project with Crest Nicholson and completion marked the end of almost six years work. The completed project is significant for HNW and we believe Crest have achieved a quality building through their final selection of materials and the skill of the construction team."

The Empress Heights development in Southampton city centre was completed in Spring 2013 - both on time and on budget.

More places for pupils at Beths Grammar School, Bexley, thanks to £1.1million renovation project

More pupils at Beths Grammar School for Boys in Bexley, Greater London, required more space and this has been innovatively created, thanks to a new and contemporary £1.1million renovation project delivered by Horizon Construction and Ingleton Wood LLP architects. The new facilities include a brand new and ultra-modern reception with full height glazing, which uses aluminium solar shading fixed to external structural steel to reduce solar gain. The solar shade system was designed and manufactured by Dales Fabrications Limited using their brand new 260mm elliptical extruded blade. The Shadex 260 helped keep build costs down since it only required supports at 5m centres. It was specified in combination with a low maintenance curved Aluminium Fascia Soffit and Meridian wall coping system, both manufactured by Dales.

The development of the new entrance and administration centre required the demolition of the existing caretaker's house and relocation of the vehicular access with the provision of new visitor parking. The new entrance block is predominantly single storey with an enhanced raised roof line to the front reception with full height glazed curtain walling to provide a much improved focal point for the school's main entrance. With such a large expanse of glass it was important to keep solar gain to a minimum and architects; Ingleton Wood LLP chose the Dales 260 Shadex solar shade blade because it is self supporting up to 5m centres, which made it ideal for the apex of the very large over-hanging canopy above the new main entrance. The largest span unsupported was 4.8m.

Steve Hart, Senior Contracts Manager at Horizon Construction - the main contractor on the project - comments: "We have worked successfully with Dales Fabrications and Ingleton Wood LLP on this project and we're very pleased with the result.

"Not only have we helped to create additional space at Beths Grammar School to accommodate more pupils, but through creative design we've constructed a centralised hub for the administrative support and senior management team. In addition, the new main entrance and reception correct the safeguarding issues that surrounded the location and accessibility of the existing school reception."

Andrew Marchant, Building Surveyor at Ingleton Wood LLP, said: "We assisted the school in securing £1.1million of funding from the Education Funding Agency (EFA) prior to providing a multidisciplinary service from conception through to completion, and we are absolutely thrilled with the result."

Equally delighted with the outcome is Andy Dyson, Facilities Manager at Beths Grammar School. He said: "I'm very pleased with the designers interpretation of the schools design brief from the onset and the management of the project throughout. The design is very appealing and creates a striking impression on all callers to the site. The detailing of the frontage with tall glass is particularly pleasing and creates the idea of a voluminous and welcoming area for the Reception Foyer while sitting on a small footprint. "Staff and students alike have passed numerous comments on the design, layout and ease of use of the building and the improved service being offered with the grouping of staff into one space. "Visitors have also been very complementary about the design saying it creates an air of professionalism and is a positive departure from the traditional reception area feel very often found in schools." Dales Fabrications designed and manufactured the aluminium Solar Shades using the Dales Shadex 260 blade, as well as the low maintenance aluminium Fascia Soffits and Meridian Wall Coping system around the roof edge. The Aluminium Fascia Soffit was manufactured to a true curve above entrance giving the finishing touch to the roof edge. Dales products were expertly fitted to a high quality standard by their Preferred Fixers: Specialised Fixings of Ipswich. All the aluminium products were given an architectural polyester powder coating in RAL 7011 Matt.

Karl Prosser, Managing Director at Dales Fabrications, said: "We are pleased to have provided a sustainable aluminium eaves solution to the aesthetically impressive new facility at the school, using our new elliptical 260mm blades over the entrance. We designed the blade so that it only requires supports at 5m centres and are pleased that this installation makes use of that benefit. We are equally pleased that the solar shades were combined with our Aluminium Fascia Soffit and Meridain wall copings system to give a one stop shop for the eaves area. We were particularly pleased and grateful for the kind assistance that Specialised Fixings and in particular, their general manager, Rob McTiernan gave us with the project as it progressed. We are delighted once again to be part of a construction team that provided another schools project on time and on budget."

Robert McTiernan, General Manager of Specialised Fixings, Ipswich - the company that worked closely alongside Dales Fabrications to install bespoke fittings at Beths Grammar School - said: "It's always a pleasure to work with the team at Dales Fabrications on projects such as this. "Dales bespoke products have certainly delivered the 'wow' factor for the school's brand new reception building. It looks fantastic! And although this particular project proved to be quite challenging, given the complexities of the curved fascia detail, Dales strived to offer a first class customer support service at each and every stage of the project." The £1.1million, 32-week renovation project at Beths Grammar School in Bexley was completed in June 2013 - both on time and on budget.

Dales Mixes A Successful Recipe of Finishes At The Restaurant Story
For Rising Star Chef Tom Sellar

One of the UK's leading manufacturers of aluminium eaves products, Dales Fabrications, has completed an intriguing project for renowned rising star chef, Tom Sellars.

Located in central London, Sellars' inaugural eatery, Restaurant Story, featured a range of distinctive elements which Dales Fabrications was able to skillfully accommodate on the constricted site. Replacing a derelict public convenience, the single storey pavilion was designed to sit modestly alongside a small garden, framing views of a listed statue and The Shard beyond.

Tasked by Space Craft Architects with differentiating between the ends of the roof and the main eaves cladding to either side, Dales used a combination of anodised and polyester powder coating finished aluminium. The result was a clever distinction between the raw edges of the building and the main surface; with large, anodized raking panels to the soffit producing a noticeable contrast to the vertical darker matt finished polyester powder coated gable end panels.

David Allgood of Allgood Guttering (Contracts) Ltd, comments: "From the outset, this project was very demanding in terms of technical spec, quality and delivery requirements, we therefore required a fabricator able to successfully meet and exceed the client's expectations. We suggested Dales Fabrications as the preferred contractor for this project given their experience, attention to detail and ability to deliver on time to a very high standard."

Dales designed and manufactured the narrow fascia and large raking soffit panels for the main eaves to the front and rear elevations in Anolok 541. The Pale Umber bronze metallic finish of the anodized panels provided a clear contrast to the dark brown, RAL 7013 matt polyester powder coated vertical panels to the gable ends of the building.

Through ensuring a consistently high level of care and attention, Allgood Guttering was able to successfully install the large panels of anodised aluminium on the spatially restricted site. The build featured a vast raking soffit overhang of 2m, facetted to a large radius plan curve, which required the panels to be modulated to the curtain-walling uprights. Precise and careful manufacturing by Dales combined with the care and attention to the detailed installation ensured that this element of the build was delivered to an exacting standard.

The client, rising star chef, Tom Sellars comments: "The building that houses Restaurant Story is all that I hoped it would be. The design is contemporary and the space clean and fresh. The use of natural materials, like the wood cladding and decking, and the garden landscaping gives the building a unique look in an area so full of stone and brick. It was also important to me that the building be sustainable and environmentally sound so having it completed to meet with the BREEAM standards, and to look so special, is a real result."

Space Craft Architects, comments: "Dales were a good team to work with, and were a critical part of the design workshop, which was crucial to ensure all parties understood the limitations and reasons behind the design concept. Despite the complexity of the canopy, I think everyone would be in agreement that it is definitely one of the highlights of the finished scheme."

Slatted timber elevations of Restaurant Story provide privacy adjacent to the roads, whilst full width glass screens allow the dining area to open up onto the more private landscaped areas, and is served by a working kitchen and store in a new basement.

Quietly modern. Historically compelling. English Heritage commend Cassidy & Ashton's design for Stonyhurst College's new refectory.

Initially created to meet the 21st century needs of pupils, the recently unveiled dining refectory at Stoneyhurst College has exceeded all expectations. Attentively designed, the refectory perfectly showcases Cassidy + Ashton's ability to create a building which is both contemporary and entirely sympathetic to its Grade 1 heritage surroundings. It also demonstrates how intelligent modern solutions can be seamlessly incorporated into virtually any design, with impressive effect.

Dales Fabrications is proud to have been specified by Cassidy & Ashton, to supply its elliptical Brise Soleil solar blades (the first time these sleek 260mm blades have been used in application), elliptical fascia with secret fix soffit panel system, and rainwater pipe.

Aesthetically impressive, the combination of gleaming structural steel work, Dales' elliptical solar blades and aluminium fascia, natural yellow sandstone, and slate elements of the build is simply stunning. Each element combines to blend heritage charm and contemporary appeal flawlessly. The smooth, curved lines of the building were complemented by Dales secret fix fascia and soffit panels, creating a clean, contemporary roof line.

The design brief was not only to create a refectory which made a statement visually, but it had to deliver an exceptional environment for pupils to relax in too. Dales solar shade systems are carefully designed to reduce the impact of solar gain and heat, without impeding the clear benefits of 'natural light'. Weather resistant, easy to maintain, entirely recyclable, and extremely cost effective, Dales Brise Soleil solar shade and aluminium solutions are ideally suited for education sector projects.

Project architects Cassidy + Ashton had this to say about working with Dales:

"Cassidy + Ashton Group Ltd has worked successfully with Dales on many projects. The Refectory building at the historic Stonyhurst College site presented many challenges in delivering a modern building; surrounded by listed buildings, however the use of sympathetic materials in the design, along with implementation of Dales solar shades, and elliptical fascia with secret fix soffit systems, to create clean roof line profiles, all helped to achieve this successfully".

English Heritage, who were in consultation with Cassidy + Ashton and Globe Construction (project builder) throughout, commended the design. Stonyhurst College refectory " is quietly modern - standing as an obvious addition to the complex, without competing with the more historical elements."

Headmaster Andrew Johnson is thrilled with the outcome:

"We are absolutely delighted with this beautiful new facility, which will enhance the lives of all our pupils. I particularly like the wonderful views across the ponds to the grounds beyond."

Stonyhurst's catering manager, Barbara Church-Taylor, said: "The new ref is absolutely wonderful and we feel very privileged to have such a stunning facility. The first day has gone extremely smoothly and the pupils are clearly delighted with it too; it has exceeded our expectations!" Pupils commented that they liked the increased space and light, and the much reduced queue at the servery!

Colin Dales Tri-es the Virgin Active London Olympic Triathlon challenge for UNICEF

colin dalesColin Dales, UK Marketing Manager for Dales Fabrications Limited, is fundraising for UNICEF by completing his first ever Olympic distance Triathlon at the Virgin Active London Triathlon that took place on Sunday 23 September 2012 at the Excel Exhibition complex at Victoria Docks in London's East End. Dales Fabrications Limited has agreed to match half of the total that Colin raises before the fundraising deadline on 23 October 2012.

All the funds raised will support UNICEF's work with children in more than 190 countries. UNICEF works with the most vulnerable children around the world to deliver health care, nutrition, education and protection to help children survive and thrive.

Colin said of the challenge: "I decided to support UNICEF by competing in the London Triathlon because I've seen the great work that UNICEF do in East Africa, in some of the world's poorest countries, such as Malawi. The Virgin Active London Triathlon is a world-renowned event and Olympic distance, which definitely tested my physical endurance in three disciplines: swimming, cycling and running. I had to complete a one mile swim in the rather murky waters of Victoria Dock, followed by a 25 mile cycle around the City, followed by the six mile run to finish.

I'd been really worried about the swim after some training problems and then my wetsuit broke twenty minutes before I was supposed to be in the water. It was a case of TriUK (www.TriUK.com ) to the rescue however, when they provided a brand new wetsuit that fitted perfectly at a great price in recognition of the fact I was doing the race for UNICEF. Their kind response really helped calm my nerves and I went on to complete the swim in a personal best time.

Dales Open Regional Office for London and South

colin dalesAs part of their planned expansion Dales Fabrications Limited, the leading manufacturer of aluminium gutters, downpipes and eaves systems, has opened its first regional office at Southampton International Business Park to better serve architects, clients and contractors located in London and the South of England and Wales. The office will be managed by Colin Dales following his recent appointment as Technical Sales (South) & UK Marketing Manager.

The office allows improved customer service for all areas of London and the southern third region of England and Wales. The office was officially opened on 1st October 2012 and Colin is pictured outside the offices with his company Triumph Tiger 800XC Motorcycle. The company chose Triumph as the only remaining major, British-owned, motor manufacturer. Slicing through the congestion by motorbike reduces carbon emissions compared to those created through use of a company car and this is line with the sustainability and environmental policies operated by Dales Fabrications Limited.

Colin welcomes enquiries directly from architects, main contractors, roofing and plumbing sub-contractors, stockists as well as potential installers for the Dales preferred-fixer network. In addition to the traditional sales and marketing tasks, there will be an ongoing programme of CPD seminars which Colin will be a key part of; and he can be contacted directly if this is of interest.

Karl Prosser, Company Secretary at Dales Fabrications is quoted as saying that "Establishing a Regional Office improves customer service as it allows a much quicker response from someone that lives locally in the southern region. This development is part of a programme of steady sustainable growth for the Company as our sector looks to capitalise on the emerging economy in the coming months and years."

Advanced (Technical) Apprentice:

Dales Fabrications are pleased to announce their intention to recruit an Advanced (Technical) Apprentice at the beginning of the next academic year, mid-September 2011. At this stage it is hoped to recruit one Advanced Apprentice who will rotate through the disciplines of Estimating, Production Processing and Project Management, whilst simultaneously working towards both NVQ Level III and BTEC National qualifications over a 2 to 3 year period.

The management of the academic training programme will be undertaken by ‘Training 2000' of Derby, who are well known to Dales Fabrications as first-class providers of training for all of their recent craft (factory-based) Intermediate Apprentices.

Karl Prosser, Company Secretary of Dales Fabrications is quoted as saying:

"The Company has always recognised the value of the apprentices in the production environment; however, our office based technical positions have never been historically filled by apprentices. The recent changes in university tuition fees has clearly lead to many talented and well-qualified candidates rightly-questioning whether they wish to incur the debt of graduate-study, as opposed to entering the job market earlier in their working-life.

Effectively the ‘earn whilst you learn' approach has to be considered a viable alternative to the traditional graduate route of study, and we have been impressed by both the calibre and by the maturity of attitude of the applicants to date. We have every confidence in ‘Training-2000' to equip our apprentices with the essential technical knowledge on which to base their careers, whilst we feel that we can offer them every opportunity to take on real responsibility at an early stage of their working lives."

Applicants for any future apprenticeships with the Company are encouraged to send either a CV marked for the attention of the ‘Company Secretary' or to approach ‘Training-2000' of Derby directly www.ts2000.co.uk.

Dales Fabrications is pleased to announce that their Nordal range of gutters, imported directly and exclusively by Dales from Norway, are now being successfully sold to the general public following launch of the direct-sales website, www.nordalgutters.co.uk, in April 2011.

Karl Prosser, Company Secretary at Dales Fabrications, is quoted as saying that:

"We maintain that Nordal remains the number one choice of guttering system for the vast majority of domestic applications, whether it be a single property, a sizeable new development or an entire local authority portfolio, especially where there is a hybrid requirement for low cost, environmental sustainability and long-lasting durability. We are particularly pleased to report that our experience with TNT couriers has resulted in delivery times to the general public which comfortably exceed our estimates, and this will result in us exploring a far wider range of products which are suitable for direct-sales in the future."

Erewash MP Jessica Lee visits Dales Fabrications

An Ilkeston manufacturer whose products boost the appearance of buildings played host to Erewash MP Jessica Lee who wanted to learn more about local industry.

Miss Lee paid a fact-finding visit to Dales Fabrications on Crompton Road Industrial Estate which has been marking its 30th anniversary as a private limited company.

Dales Fabrications makes bespoke aluminium products to enhance the appearance of buildings such as hospitals, schools, office buildings, apartment blocks, and fire and police stations across the country.

Chartered engineer Frank Dales founded the company in 1977 to meet the need for precision, purpose-made steel gutters for building projects, and saw the scope to expand into aluminium eaves systems.

Dales Fabrications became a private limited company three years later. Mr Dales retired in 2000, but in 2008 he returned as chief executive.

Since then he has made a number of changes, particularly with technical advances in manufacturing and using IT-based equipment. These have improved the product range which now includes rainwater systems(gutters and pipes), fascias and soffits, and solar shading, a growing component in modern buildings.

Recent buildings where the company has supplied products to include Littlewick Medical Centre, Ilkeston; Kingsway Hospital, Derby; Chellaston Junior School, Derby; Scargill Primary School, West Hallam; Cotgrave Caldebury Lane School, Cotgrave, Nottinghamshire; and Netherfield Primary School, Netherfield, Nottingham.

It also supplied products to the Irene Kennedy Centre at Wirrall Ark, Merseyside, which won a Green Apple Environmental Best Practice Award for its architects, Denovo Design of Liverpool, who picked up their trophy at the House of Commons yesterday (Mon, Nov 15).

The company prides itself on its green credentials, recycling redundant aluminium.

It has 31 employees, including a new apprentice, and takes local school children on work experience and to demonstrate engineering as a profession. It supports the local community by sponsoring shirts for Long Eaton Riverside Rapids under 10s football team.

Dales Fabrication is an associate of regeneration agency Erewash Partnership and Miss Lee's visit stemmed from a recent event when company secretary Karl Prosser asked her about initiatives to back the construction industry.

"We invited the new MP to come along and see how a small Ilkeston firm is contributing to the local manufacturing economy," he said.

"Ilkeston has a long tradition of manufacturing metal products and we are delighted to be continuing this in these difficult times."

Miss Lee said she had a brilliant afternoon looking around the company, when she learned a lot about the technical side of how it works.

"I have been really impressed by the family business with members of staff who have been working for the company for more than 30 years," she said.

"I feel very passionate about supporting the local manufacturing industry."

"Dales is an ideal example of a successful small business in Ilkeston."

The Irene Kennedy Centre at the Wirral Ark.

Dales Fabrications Ltd was a joint contributor to The Irene Kennedy Centre at the Wirral Ark, which is among the major winners in the Green Apple Environmental Best Practice Awards, one of the few accredited feeder schemes into the European Business Awards for the Environment.

The scheme has a number of environmental features, including its ‘green' roof, which has attracted considerable positive attention and which has inspired the Client to run with the environmental baton and to secure from the Cheshire Beekeepers Association, two bee hives to be located up on the roof, as soon as the bee colonies can be moved from their present location! The trophy will be presented at the House of Commons on Monday 15 November 2010.

Dales Fabrications join the ‘One' Show.

Dales Fabrications were specified to design, manufacture and supply their sustainable Aluminium Fascia & Soffit products on the ‘Suffolk One' project in Ipswich, which opened its doors to students on the 1st September 2010.

The One building, Suffolk

The £52m building is a flagship project on behalf of the South West Ipswich & South Suffolk partnership and was formerly known as the SWISS project. The contemporary design consists of a glass facade over the three storeys which reflect the Soffit planks and there is also an overhanging fin detail with aluminium fascia and soffit. As such both the fascia and soffit detail were a core feature of the building. Attention to the design detail and quality of installation were paramount in achieving the high tech finish required for the project.

‘Dales' 35 years bespoke manufacturing experience was a major factor in their specification by Bond Bryan Architects and Dales products were installed by the Ipswich based contractors, Plasufix, who are a member of the Dales UK network of preferred Installers. Plasufix worked with Briggs Amasco and the main contractors, ISG Jackson, to make sure both the demanding budget and programme targets were met.
